As an owner or lessee, you can register information about your home or holiday home in the cadastre. This is a new service from the Norwegian Mapping Authority, launched in February 2026.
The national register for land information (the cadastre) provides access to services and information from the cadastre and land register. The information in the cadastre about properties, buildings and addresses is used by both private and public actors, and by you and me. In the new self-service solution, owners and lessees can register certain information themselves. The registration is voluntary and initially applies to selected information about dwellings in homes and holiday homes. The self-service solution supplements, but does not replace, municipal building case processing.
As an owner or lessee, you can log in to the national register for land information (the cadastre) and see what information is registered about your property, address, home or holiday home. By checking that the information is correct, you can do both yourself and the society a great service and contribute to ensuring that the information in the cadastre matches reality and given permits. Therefore, the Norwegian Mapping Authority, has opened a self-service solution where owners and lessees can register selected information. Those who are given the opportunity to register will receive a notification from the Norwegian Mapping Authority. Self-registration is voluntary.
Notification to co-owners after registration
If you own a home or a holiday home together with someone, it is sufficient for one owner to register. The other owners will receive a notification of the registration and can correct the information. The last registered information is always valid.
It is important to self-register
The building data of the cadastre is an important data source. We know that there is either a lack of data or that the data is of varying quality. Therefore, the Norwegian Mapping Authority allows owners and lessees to register certain information about their own homes and holiday homes themselves.
The self-service solution is intended to help simplify interaction between residents, the municipality and other agencies. It is a step for a more complete and updated cadastre that uses multiple data sources. Information from the register is used, among others, in municipal planning, case processing, collection of taxes and fees, statistics and research, in inheritance and change of ownership, and sales.
You can read more about what the information is used for in the article Use of property information (this article is not translated into English).
Self-registration is initially open to private individuals who are owners or lessees of residential and holiday homes. You can register information if you are:
• Listed as a registered owner or lessee in the land register • Registered as an owner or tenant in the cadastre • Reported by The Norwegian Tax Administration as an owner or lessee and it is registered in the cadastre
If the property is not registered, it will be the person or persons listed as the owner or lessee in the cadastre who can self-register.
If there is a leasehold that has been attached, it will be the lessee who can self-register.
Self-registration will only be allowed for dwellings in a selection of residential and holiday homes. The building in which the dwelling is located must be registered with a completion status, i.e. the building has a building status in the cadastre that indicates that it has been taken into use or is ready to be taken into use, for example a certificate of completion or taken into use.
Not all owners and lessees will be able to register information. There are some criteria related to the building, and restrictions when it comes to ownership. You cannot self-register if the ownership is in one of these categories:
• Owners of housing cooperative units og share apartments • Virksomheter og juridiske rettighetshavere • Businesses and legal rights holders • Owners where new ownership has not yet been updated after takeover or purchase • The property is owned by other properties
Self-registration is not available for unnumbered dwellings, typically garages and outbuildings. This means that if you own a unit that is registered as unnumbered, but which should be a residence or holiday home, you must first contact the municipality to assess whether this should be changed.
Information registered by owners and lessee will not replace previously registered data from other sources. It is voluntary to register information in this solution. The data must exist and be presented in parallel as a supplementary data source. Registering information about one's own home or holiday home therefore does not replace changes that require application or notification under the Planning and Building Act.
Information that can be self-registered
The year the dwelling was completed and could be used for the first time. Refurbishment, rehabilitation or additions at a later date do not change the year of construction.
Energy is the source(s) that the dwelling uses for heating, lighting, and appliances. A dwelling can have multiple types of energy sources at the same time. Heating is the main way(s) that your dwelling gets heat. A dwelling can have multiple types of heating at the same time.
