S-100, the new standard for maritime chart data in Norway.

As the official hydrographic authority in Norway, the Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket) serves as the coordinator of the national effort to enable the production and publication of Norwegian datasets within the S-100 framework.

What is the S-100 Standard?

After several decades of using S-57 data for navigation, the new S-100 standard will enable a new generation of digital products and services, empowering the hydrographic, maritime, and GIS communities with data that extends beyond traditional hydrographic boundaries.

The S-100 framework represents a revolutionary step forward by enabling the integration of multiple datasets within a single Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).

Mariners will be able to combine different data layers, such as Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs), detailed bathymetric information, and dynamic water level and current data, to improve situational awareness and support better decision-making.

According to the International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) implementation plan, most national hydrographic offices are expected to be able to deliver their first S-100 datasets by 2030.

S-100 in Norway

The Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket) is Norway’s official hydrographic authority and has been actively involved in the development of the new S-100 standard.

The release of products based on the new standards follows the implementation roadmap established by the S-100 Implementation Strategy | IHO.

Status of Official S-100 Navigation Products in Norway

  • S-102: High-resolution bathymetric data for navigation in selected ports, narrow approaches, and anchorage areas. Available since 2024.
  • S-104: Dynamic water level information for navigation as a nationwide model. Launched in March 2026.
  • S-111: Surface current information for navigation as a nationwide model. Launched in March 2026.
